Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Crossing an Ocean Under Power follows a retired software entrepreneur and his computer game designer wife, as they cross the Atlantic on their 62’ trawler. Although sailors have been crossing oceans for hundreds of years, the era of couples cruising the world in small powerboats is just beginning. As the book begins, Mr. Williams frankly admits to serious doubts about his boating skills. Mr. Williams chronicles his journey across the Atlantic, as well as his personal journey from "coastal cruiser" to "ocean crosser". Along the way, we learn with him. Sans Souci, his boat, made the trip as part of the historic first Atlantic Power Boat rally (18 small power boats, averaging only 50 feet long, owned and captained mostly by retired couples.) Best described as a "Dummy’s Guide to Crossing Oceans", Mr. Williams’ honest, and entertaining, style will keep you turning pages as you take this important step in readying yourself for your own long-distance cruising.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Simple and informative book -highly recommend
I cannot disagree more with some of these reviews. This book details in a simple, "captain log", what it is to cross the wide open sea by your own power. Robert Beebe would have been proud. I must emphatically disagree with one reveiwers comments. Any man that powers the atlantic - can NEVER be called a wimp. You sir, IMHO, do yourself and the author a real diservice. Mr Williams has the unique honor of being one of a handfull of boat owner/operators to cross the Atlantic Ocean under his own power. ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Comment by the author
At the time I wrote this book, my wife Roberta, and I, had spent thousands of hours on boats. We owned a boat capable of crossing oceans, but never actually intended to do so. We really just wanted a boat that could withstand the rough weather conditions we might see in the Pacific Northwest.

Our lives were changed forever when we were invited to participate in Nordhavn's Atlantic Rally. I almost threw the email away, but then routed it to Roberta, just to see what she would say. To my ... Read More

Rating: 1 out of 5 stars - Crossing An Ocean Under Power
A very badly written book. If it wasn't self-published no editor would allow it to be presented in this form. The man has a very poor grasp of our language. As a man of the sea he shows himself to be the greatest WIMP of all times.

I'm very sorry I spent money and time on this "magazine".

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Great book for someone striving for the dream. . .
I grew up playing Ken and Roberta's computer games so I kind of had a natural gravitation toward this book when my interest in trawler yachts began. I've never been to sea but hope one day to circumnavigate.

This book helped ease my 'fears' of that first journey. Ken writes from his own perspective and expresses his fears/thoughts/concerns/joys. He details everything from flopper stoppers to fuel transfers amongst tank. While not detailed/technical in his descriptions the basic theory ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Not a "How to" But a Useful, Engaging, Record of Ocean-hopping for Small Power Boat Owners
As a fan of Beebe's "Voyaging Under Power" and a jealous admirer of the Nordhavn 62 expedition style trawler yacht, I read with interest about the 2004 transatlantic convoy sponsored by Pacific Asian Enterprises, builder of the Nordhavn line of high seas and offshore trawler yachts. I don't own a Nordhavn 62 (I wish) and my seafaring is limited to adolescent adventures in my small sailing skiff and the occasional offshore fishing trip, venturing out not much past 20 miles from the shore. I had followed ... Read More
