Product Description: The Pulitzer Prize-winning author reveals how Lincoln won the Civil War and invented the role of commander in chief as we know it
As we celebrate the bicentennial of Lincoln's birth, this study by preeminent, bestselling Civil War historian James M. McPherson provides a rare, fresh take on one of the most enigmatic figures in American history. Tried by War offers a revelatory (and timely) portrait of leadership during the greatest crisis our nation has ever endured. Suspenseful and inspiring, this is the story of how Lincoln, with almost no previous military experience before entering the White House, assumed the powers associated with the role of commander in chief, and through his strategic insight and will to fight changed the course of the war and saved the Union.

Another excellent book on Lincoln. Received in good condition and in a good timescale. Excellent for my historical research.

Historian James McPherson is justly famous for having written Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era (Oxford History of the United States) -not only the best single volume book of the US Civil War, but one of the very best books of History on any country at any time. Battle Cry of Freedom offered a unique synthesis of Civil War scholarship in a brilliantly written and meticulously considered book. Since "Battle Cry of Freedom", McPherson has struggled in vain to produce anything as remarkable. ... Read More

McPherson's "Tried By War" presented a good overview of the central themes of the Civil War. The South wanted independence and freedom to dictate their own economic self-determination. The North wanted to preserve the "union" and mitigate the South's economic workhorse - the slave. Overall, "Tried By War" was neither a militarily technical book nor an overly political one.
However, McPherson's book did bring the reader into the mind-set of the federal government's leadership during the ... Read More

A very well written history of Lincoln that illustrates his political and strategic skills that he utilized to win the Civil War. It thoughtfully details how politcally astute Lincoln was (as if anybody debated that fact!) and how he skillfully managed wartime generals, politicians, foreign governments, the media, and civilians to achieve a seemingly unattainable object - the preservation of the union. This book is yet another perspective that illuminates how great this man really was! It is a shorter ... Read More

I will be amazed if this review stays on Amazon.com but here goes....I am giving this book a "1" star and have not even read it. The reason? I refuse to pay $19.25 for a Kindle book. I bought my Kindle almost 2 months ago because I am an avid book reader and Amazon told how ebooks will be so much cheaper to purchase. Well Mr. McPherson and whoever your greedy publishing company is....I refuse to purchase your book which is actually a shame. I was really looking forward to reading this book but will probably ...
