Editorial Review:
Product Description: Hervey Garrett Smith was the foremost marine illustrator of the 1950s and 1960s, and his wonderful drawings of traditional ropework quickly propelled The Marlinspike Sailor to cult classic status when it was published in 1956. With the addition of a section on modern, synthetic rope in the 1970s, its popularity has continued undiminished to this day. It teaches a few basic knots--the bowline, sheet bend, and rolling hitch, among others--and splices in three-strand and braided rope. But its real business is decorative rope and canvaswork--the traditional arts of the sailor--and here it has no equal. For a rope mat, a rope ladder, a sea chest, a ditty bag, a canvas bucket, a mast boot, and the best-looking rope fenders or heaving line in the marina, this is the book of choice.

The name implies the art of marlin spike ropework, it has some interesting history (as they all do) but lacks with any of the detailed drawings or photos necessary for most people to follow the nuances of certain knots. The cover promises so many beautiful creations but the instructions are fast and vague as to render most items worthless to even follow. It was a waste of my money.

Great book on Knots, very clear instructions, useful list. Every sailor should own a copy!

An excellent book for anyone interested in rope. Beautifully illustrated. This could be as close as I get to a stroll on deck of a turn of the century clipper ship.
The diagrams are clear and concise but again, in my opinion it's the illustration that sets this book above the rest.

Pros: It's well written and fun to read. It's full of historic information and anecdotes. The illustrations represent a wide variety of interesting projects .
Cons: The book is very uneven. Some projects are explained in details with patterns and step-by-step diagrams. Some have little or no explanation. I also noticed that some knot-tying diagrams are inaccurate and near-impossible to follow.
I recommend the book as a fun and engaging overview of marlinspike seamanship, ... Read More

Although this book is an interesting addition to my bookshelf, it seems to be more concerned with ornamental knots and rope work. I've wanted to get for years and I think anyone who buys it will be happy with it as an introduction to splices, etc. It's got a good feel. If you're determined to get into 18th century maritime sailorcraft, it won't be the last book you order. ARRRH!
